Sing

I really love music.  I think some who know me may be surprised to find out the right combination of lyrics and tune can actually move me to tears.  I have my home setup in such a way so I can listen to music almost regardless of where I am. Kitchen, living room, office, garage and especially the back yard are all wired for sound.  Some may say that my tastes are stuck in the 60s, but I try to keep an open mind and I do enjoy a wide range of artists and styles.  A few years ago I had a bit of a revelation once when I heard someone singing along to the radio.  I realized they must be very comfortable and relaxed in order to feel like singing, especially if they were in a position where they knew others could hear them.  I now believe it goes even a bit further than that. I believe that someone who is singing, cannot be unhappy, and so singing equals happiness! Since this revelation, anytime I hear someone singing, I always encourage them. Please continue, I love your singing, bravo, anything that let's them know I am enjoying it. For me, it's almost as much about the feelings I know they must be experiencing as it is the music. Even someone screeching through some song that I don't particularly like is literally "music to my ears" .  By extension, dancing is quite similar and I dare you to find someone swaying to their favourite tune who is NOT happy!  I will tell you something else most of you don't know. My own playlist moves me physically. When I'm listening to my own favourites, I automatically start tapping my foot or drumming my fingers. Sometimes, I even start dancing with myself, even while standing in the lineup at Tim Hortons!  Some of you are probably saying..."I would like to see that". Well its true, but you may have to pay close attention because I have developed a very unique new dance. Let me explain.  Working out has really improved my muscle tone over the last few years, even if some of those muscles are covered with a bit of flab. Well, I have developed my ability to move many of my muscles independently on one side of my body or other and I can isolate specific muscles of one leg etc. I can wiggle my ears, and I can wink my pectoral muscles separately.  Well, my need to groove to the music has led me to start "dancing" with individual muscles, and this sometimes even starts to happen subconsciously.  I can also wink each of my gluteal muscles independently and here's my secret. I often find myself "ass dancing" while I'm waiting in line for coffee, or anything else for that matter.  I can even do a different beat with each cheek at the same time! I have caught myself doing this in public, and stopped for fear of being exposed, but no more. I am going to proudly ass dance any chance I get, just to demonstrate my mood!
So in short, please sing and dance to the music of your life any chance you get and don't let anyone's reaction stop you. Tell them it makes you happy and encourage them to join you.

  1. Love this! One of the treasures that Sam sold when he was raising money by selling "good ideas" was, "you should sing, because you can't be sad or angry when you're singing!"
